Reploge Globe: An upgrade from 110 (115/120) to 220 (230/240) Volt
I recently
became the proud owner of a
Replogle
Livingston
globe. Unfortunately, it was originally intended for a U.S.-American
audience and was equipped for 110 V. Getting it to work in a region
favoring 230 V turned out to require more than changing plug and
bulb, as the bulb socket itself was incompatible.
Some
research showed that the hollow off-white cylinder that guides the
power cable, holds the bulb socket, and functions as the rotational
axis of the globe, is not glued to the socket, is it first seemed.
The process of converting the globe takes the following easy steps:
-
Open the globe and remove the axis/socket/bulb as described in the
manual for bulb changes.
-
Unscrew the black socket from the white axle. To get enough
leverage while turning the axle, insert a screwdriver or similar
tool into the side of the axle (grey spot in the image), sticking
out perpendicular to the axis. In my case, this hole had still
been partly covered.
- Cut the power cord and remove it.
-
Obtain a power cord (with switch, if desired) for the appropriate
local voltage, an E-14 socket, and a 25 Watt E14 bulb (stretched,
see image).
-
Connect the power cord to the socket, after putting the cord
through the axle and the base holder ring (similar to how it was
with the 110 Volt cord).
- Screw in the bulb and reassemble the globe.
